🗣️ Overcoming the Language Barrier in Guangzhou

One of the biggest challenges for international visitors to the Canton Fair is communication. While young people and fair volunteers often speak English, most taxi drivers, local restaurant owners, and shopkeepers do not.

How to Use These Cards Effectively

Don't just try to pronounce the Chinese words yourself—tones in Mandarin/Cantonese are difficult to master quickly. Instead:

  1. Select the card that matches your need.
  2. Tap it to enter Full-Screen Mode.
  3. Hold your phone up clearly to the person.
  4. Wait for a nod or a gesture of understanding.

Essential Cultural Etiquette

A little politeness goes a long way in China. Even if you rely on these cards, learning two words will help you get better service:

What about Translation Apps?

Apps like Google Translate work well, but they require a VPN in China. For a smoother experience without a VPN, we recommend downloading Microsoft Translator or Baidu Translate before you arrive. However, for quick interactions (like "Where is the toilet?"), our static cards above are much faster than opening an app.

Pro Tip for Food Allergies: Chinese cooking often uses peanut oil and various sauces. If you have a severe allergy (e.g., Peanuts, Seafood), do not just rely on a verbal "No". Show the specific allergy card above to the waiter and ensure they show it to the chef.
