Baiyun Airport (CAN) to City Center: Metro vs Taxi vs DiDi
Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) is located about 30-40km north of the city center (Tianhe District). Depending on traffic, getting to your hotel can take anywhere from 40 minutes to 1.5 hours.
Here is a breakdown of your three main options to help you choose the best one.
Option 1: The Metro Cheapest
The Metro is the most reliable way to beat the notorious Guangzhou traffic jams.
- Line: Metro Line 3 (North Extension).
- Stations: "Airport South" (Terminal 1) and "Airport North" (Terminal 2).
- Cost: Approx. 7-9 RMB ($1-1.50 USD).
- Time: ~45-50 minutes to Tiyu Xilu (City Center).
The Downside: Line 3 is arguably the busiest metro line in the world. If you have large suitcases and are traveling during rush hour (8:00 AM or 6:00 PM), it will be a very tight squeeze.
Option 2: Taxi Easiest
If you have luggage or are traveling in a group, a taxi is the most convenient option. You don't need an app; just follow the English signs to the "Taxi Boarding Area."
- Cost: Approx. 120-180 RMB ($17-25 USD), depending on destination.
- Tolls: Passengers are responsible for highway tolls (approx. 15 RMB).
- Time: 40-60 minutes (without heavy traffic).
Note: Most drivers do not speak English. Have your hotel address written in Chinese (large font) to show them.
Option 3: DiDi (Ride Hailing) Smart Choice
DiDi is China's version of Uber. It is often cleaner and slightly cheaper than regular taxis.
- App: Download the "DiDi" app (English version available) before you arrive.
- Pickup Point: DiDi drivers cannot pick up at the departures curb. You usually need to walk to a designated Parking Lot (e.g., P1, P2). The app will guide you.
- Payment: It charges your linked credit card automatically (Alipay/WeChat).
As soon as you exit baggage claim into the Arrival Hall, men in uniforms might approach you whispering "Taxi? Taxi?" or "Cheap ride?".
IGNORE THEM.
These are illegal drivers ("Black Cars"). They will lead you to a private car and charge you 3x or 4x the normal meter price (e.g., 500 RMB). Official taxi drivers are required to stay in their cars in the queue line outside. They never come into the hall to solicit passengers.
