How to Use the Guangzhou Metro: Maps, Tickets & Apps (2025 Guide)
If you want to survive in Guangzhou without getting stuck in endless traffic jams, you need to master the Metro. It is clean, safe, incredibly cheap, and usually the fastest way to get anywhere.
However, with over 15 lines and massive stations, it can be intimidating. This guide will walk you through exactly how to ride like a local in 2025.
1. Download "MetroMan" Before You Go
Do not rely on Google Maps for public transport schedules in China, as it can sometimes be outdated. The gold standard for foreigners is an app called MetroMan.
It offers an English interface, works offline, calculates travel time/price, and tells you exactly which exit to take. Available on iOS and Android.
2. How to Buy Tickets
Gone are the days of needing pockets full of coins. You have three main options:
Option A: Alipay / WeChat (The Best Way)
If you have set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with your international credit card, you don't need a physical ticket.
- Open Alipay.
- Click on "Transport" or "Metro".
- Select "Guangzhou".
- A QR code will generate. Scan this code at the turnstile to enter and exit. The fare is deducted automatically.
Option B: Yang Cheng Tong (Physical Card)
This is a rechargeable IC card (similar to Oyster in London or Octopus in HK). You can buy one at any 7-Eleven or FamilyMart. It saves you time, but you need cash to top it up at machines.
Option C: Single Journey Token
If you prefer cash, look for the automated ticket machines in the station. Select English, tap your destination, and insert coins or small bills (5, 10, 20 RMB). You will get a green plastic coin token.
3. Important Lines for Travelers
Guangzhou's network is huge, but you will likely spend most of your time on these three lines:
- Line 3 (Orange): The "Airport Line". It connects Baiyun Airport to the city center (Tianhe). Warning: It is notoriously known as the "Hell Line" during rush hour. Expect to be squeezed!
- Line 8 (Teal): The "Fair Line". This line stops at the Canton Fair Complex (Pazhou Station & Xingangdong Station).
- APM Line (Sky Blue): A short, driverless automated train that runs through the CBD. It's great for sightseeing near the Canton Tower and Opera House.
4. Step-by-Step Riding Guide
- Security Check: Every bag must go through an X-ray machine. Bottled water? You might be asked to take a sip to prove it's not gasoline.
- Tap In: Scan your QR code or tap your token/card on the sensor. The gate will open.
- Ride: Follow the signs (in English and Chinese). Wait for people to get off before you get on.
- Tap Out: At your destination, scan your QR code or tap your card again.
Note: If you used a Single Journey Token, insert the coin into the slot to exit.
Carrying heavy luggage?
While the Metro is efficient, navigating stairs and crowded trains (especially Line 3) with big suitcases is stressful.
Taxis in Guangzhou are surprisingly affordable.
